Visitors can only enter the mangroves in the company of an experienced nature guide. Your stable, glass bottom sit-on-top kayak is equipped with a comfortable backrest seat, a waterproof bag for your personal belongings and, of course, paddles. Off you go, into the calm waters. The glass bottom kayak provides an ideal mode of transport in this beautiful and tranquil environment, as you manoeuvre with ease through the mangrove shallows and tunnels. Gliding by four different species of mangrove trees in crystal-clear waters, paddling past bird habitats and fish spawning areas, you'll learn of the relationship between the plants and the animals. The snorkel location offers a great variety of marine life and is considered by many a must-do while visiting Bonaire!

The best way to experience Bonaire Washington Park Tour is with a guide who knows the most beautiful spots! Beautiful and unspoiled are understatements when describing Bonaire Washington Slagbaai National Park. Discover its treasures on this specially guided tour through hidden coves, secluded beaches, salt lakes & magical watering holes. Originally inhabited by the Caiquetio Indians, Bonaire Washington Park is the first nature sanctuary of the former Netherland Antilles. Established in 1969 and located in the Northwest part of the island, it covers an area roughly one fifth of Bonaire, and it had Slagbaai, the largest most productive plantations during the colonial period. Today Bonaire Washington Slagbaai National Park and its pristine beaches are an important nesting ground for the sea turtles that visit the waters of our island, Bonaire. With a flexible itinerary, you will have plenty of opportunities to admire and photograph the flora & fauna in their natural habitats.

Flamingo & Mangrove Trip with Local Guide

Flamingo & Mangrove Trip with Local Guide

The mangrove forest of Lac Bay is one of the best preserved mangrove forests in the Caribbean. For generations this lush, green environment has served as a home and incubator to native fish, baby rays, lobster and seahorses. The bushy and beautiful trees and their deep, webbed roots, protect Bonaire from extreme weather conditions. In fact, it’s rumored that they’re strong enough to withstand the wind and water to the point of slowing a tsunami! The mangroves are a series of narrow channels that are covered by natural canopies made by the bending of the mangrove trees that house birds, fish and clean the water. For centuries fisherman and tourists have been visiting, kayaking and exploring this area of rich waters. Historically, they also provided means to make household items and played an important role in the fishing community, which you will learn about on this tour. While driving south to the Mangroves, your guide will inform you about the history and sites of Bonaire.

On this hour long tour you will experience Bonaire's Donkey Sanctuary - a habitat that was created to rescue donkeys needing extra care, food and water. You will interact with the donkeys throughout the drive as they regularly "say hello" and attempt to put their noses through the car window! At the sanctuary you can also purchase a few carrots to feed a few lucky donkeys while on your visit. At the sanctuary you will also see a few other things. The Special Care Unit is an area of the sanctuary where we will learn about the services provided to bring a distressed donkey back to health. You can also visit the garden where you will see local plants, tortoises, and iguanas. Climbing up the watchtower will give you a great view of the entire sanctuary and a nice photo opportunity. We'll round out our visit with a refreshing drink and snack from the terrace where you can spot some beautiful pink flamingos over the salt lake.
