The Basics

A visit to the Blue Grotto is a must for visitors on a day trip or shore excursion from the Amalfi Coast, Naples, or Sorrento. You can reach the cave by water or land, but to enter the cave, you must board an official rowboat. Due to the high number of visitors, wait times can stretch for hours, though passengers of private boat tours are often given precedence. Book your boat transfer to and from the Blue Grotto in advance to avoid long lines, or reserve a private tour with a boat ride around Capri and the Faraglioni rock formations.

Amazing experience, highly recommend
This is a must do tour!!! Capri is breathtaking and beautiful. Unfortunately blue grotto was closed but we had a great time anyway. Marcella and Anna-Maria are fun, knowledgeable, and just lovely. Can’t recommend this tour enough - it was completely worth it!

Capri and Blue Grotto Day Tour from Naples or Sorrento
Blue grotto was closed due to choppy sea so we had a boat cruise around the island which allowed us to see more of Capri. The tour guide lived on the island and was very knowledgeable. Would recommend.

Capri & Blue Grotto Boat Trip-Prime Experience with max. 8 guests from Sorrento
We had two excellent tour guides - Luciano and Luca were so fun and made our experience so memorable. We had a great time on the boat and they showed us all the special parts of Capri. We had lots of free time in both Anacapri and Capri to roam around. They treated us to light snacks, sandwiches, and drinks. They were an A+ team! Highly recommend doing this tour with Luca and Luciano if possible!

Capri Blue Grotto Boat Tour From Sorrento
10 boat mates and captain, Francesco, made for a perfectly gorgeous tour around and on Capri. Highlight were jumping into the blue, blue sea, crusing along the coast, making new friends exploring the island, Take the chairlift from Anicapri! Our tour guide, Francesco, was outstanding. Knowledgeable about the entire region gave us tons of recommendations. A perfect day.

Capri Blue Grotto Boat Tour From Sorrento
Luca was a great tour guide. He was very knowledgeable about the area, had great stories and was so friendly and helpful. We did not get to see the Blue Grotto because the tide was too high. It was no one’s fault but therefore not a five star experience. The rest of the tour was good but personally not a highlight of our trip. We swam, toured around Capri and stopped for 3 hours on the island. The tour company was good and we felt safe with the guide and captain.

This was a wonderful way to explore capri and the surrounding areas without the crowds. The boat and crew were wonderful and gave us plenty of time to explore and swim. Skip the lines and crowded ferries and book this tour!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • At the cave entrance, you must purchase a ticket from the floating ticket office and board a rowboat to enter. This is included in most boat tours.

  • Due to the low cave entrance, the Blue Grotto is only open when weather conditions permit.

  • You’ll have to wait to enter the cave aboard small, open-air rowboats, so bring a hat and sunblock.

  • The journey to the Blue Grotto is not recommended for those who suffer from seasickness.

  • Once inside the cave, many rowboat skippers will treat you to a serenade for a small tip.

How to Get to the Blue Grotto

You can reach the Blue Grotto by sea from the Marina Grande port or by land from the town of Anacapri.

When to Get There

The cave is most crowded in summer and during the midday hours, so plan to visit first thing in the morning to avoid a long wait to enter. Note that the Blue Grotto is open only when sea conditions permit, so when the waters are rough or there are high winds, the cave may close with no advance warning.

Capri by Land

The Blue Grotto can only be visited by sea, but the island of Capri has a number of attractions on land, as well. Take an island tour of Villa San Michele, with its sweeping views over the Mediterranean, the lush Gardens of Augustus, and the 14th-century Charterhouse of San Giacomo.
