Great Ocean Road

west of Port Campbell on Great Ocean Road, Torquay to Warrnambool, Victoria, 3228

The Basics

The best way to take in this spectacular stretch of highway is by car or coach, with most driving tours departing from Melbourne and including a tour guide, round-trip transportation, and a visit to the Twelve Apostles.

Activities along the way may include wine tastings in Apollo Bay; wild koala-spotting in Kennett River; hiking along the shipwreck coast to witness the natural splendor of the Loch Ard Gorge; or pulling over at sunset to witness the Great Ocean Road at its most majestic. Day trips on the route can be combined with a stop at Phillip Island for the famous penguin parade.

Luxury Private Great Ocean Road Tour up to 7 people - Entire Vehicle
The drive is absolutely spectacular along the coast, through parks and rainforests, farm lands, small towns. There are look outs from where one can view the limestone formations that are rocks in the middle of the sea. Truly a memorable experience.

Great Ocean Road Tour for Backpackers, Students and Young travellers
Cam is a very good tour guide, driver and person as a whole. He is passionate about his job and very experienced. The great ocean road is amazing but with Cam, he makes the trip better than what we expected. He is entertaining and you can feel his love towards wildlife animals. He helped us spot lots of koalas, wallaby, kangaroos and even stingrays in the ocean. He is also very helpful.

It was such a great experience! I did this tour with my sister, and we really loved it. Cam is very interesting and knows lots of stories about the places we went with him. The fact that it is a small group is really a plus!

Private Great Ocean Road Tour with Local Guide / Reverse tour Recommended
Mark is simply one of the best guides we have ever had. Totally well cared for, figured out what schedule and sights would be best, and made for a truly memorable day. The sights themselves are some of the the best cliffs and I have ever seen. The koalas in nature, the Roos, and numerous birds were also great. I wholeheartedly suggest this tour if you have a day to do it.

When to Get There

In December and January, the road’s small coastal towns are especially popular among Australians from New South Wales and South Australia cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide. Crowds can often dampen the tranquil atmosphere of the route; an off-season visit can help you avoid both traffic and the scorching summer sun.

Best Outdoor Experiences Along the Route

The waves off the Great Ocean Road are a paradise for surfers, who flock here from Melbourne, while seaside towns such as Geelong, Lorne, and Torquay offer whale-watching and maritime history. The Port Campbell National Park is another must, as is the Great Otway National Park—home to kangaroos, wallabies, and fairy penguins—and the Twelve Apostles Marine National Park.
