A unique sight in Orvieto, the Pozzo di San Patrizio (St. Patrick’s Well) is a remarkable feat of hydraulic engineering dating from the 16th century. Descend the double-helix staircases down almost 200 feet (more than 50 meters), and admire the ingenious design aimed at providing the clifftop city with water in times of siege.

Private 2-Hour Photography Tour in Orvieto with a Pro
Of all Italian hill towns perhaps Orvieto is the most photogenic and easiest to walk around. Largely pedestrianized and flat, it is easily covered on foot. The medieval streets and alleyways have both imposing palaces and quaint, modest townhouses. Orvieto is full of surprises: round that corner, you catch sight of the imposing Gothic facade of the cathedral for the first time; at the end of an alleyway is the entrance to a Renaissance courtyard; over there is the entrance to an ancient Etruscan tomb.
Your photography teacher has lived here for 15 years and knows the place intimately. He has taught photography for 20 years and has been a pro since graduating from photography college in 1977.
From the city walls, there are stunning views of the surrounding countryside with vineyards, olive groves, and picturesque villas and farms across two regions, Tuscany and Umbria.

Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio with Driver Private Shore Excursion for Cruiser
Just a short journey north of Civitavecchia lies the enchanting little hill town of Orvieto. Close by is the postcard-perfect village of Civita di Bagnoregio.
Together, our Orvieto & Civita di Bagnoregio shore excursion is a delightful excursion into the beautiful and relaxing countryside of Lazio and Umbria away from the hustle and bustle of Rome.
We will begin by taking a scenic two-hour drive to Orvieto, a town perched high atop a hill. Orvieto is impressively situated above a volcanic plug, which is a volcanic landform created when magma hardens within a vent on an active volcano.
You will have time to explore it and enjoy lunch before heading to Civita di Bagnoregio, a small ancient village that clings to the precipice of the steep hill it sits on, a small island in an uninhabitable landscape that makes up the surrounding valleys and provides an incredible picturesque view.

Walking Guided Tour to Visit of Orvieto
Orvieto stands out on a tuff hill, showing off its jewels, first of all the wonderful Duomo. Under it, another city is hidden and preserved, dug over the centuries through the rock. Walking through the streets, we will discover two unique architectural jewels. The first is the Pozzo della Cava: this is a complex from the Etruscan era with various hypogeal environments and a well dug into the tuff rock on which the city rests.
The second stop of the visit that we will reach with a short walk is the famous Well of St. Patrick: this water structure dates back to the sixteenth century and had the dual function of water supply in case of disaster but also a refuge in case of attack. Designed by Antono da Sangallo il Giovane, it has the peculiarity of having a double staircase whose access is guaranteed by separate doors that allow for totally separate access flows. 54 meters deep, this engineering jewel will be the highlight of this exciting guided tour.
