Montserrat is a mountain top monastery situated on top an unusual rock mountain. It is the highest point of the Catalan lowlands. Montserrat monastery hosts “la Moreneta”, also called Black Madonna. The legend says that the benedictine monks found the statue, and they could not move the statue to build their monastery, so they decided to construct it around the statue. Montserrat was designated as a National Park in 1987. Nowadays, it is a site of pilgrimage of people around the world. Once in Montserrat, enjoy a 45 minutes small group guided tour, and then you will have 2 hours to explore. You can visit la Moreneta, enter to the Museum, taste the monastery’s homemade liquor, go to an easy walk to the Saint Miguel cross, take the Sant Joan Funicular, and more.

The origin of the monastery is uncertain, but it is believed that the Virgin of Monsterrat (la Moreneta) was found around 880. According to the legends, the monks build the monastery around the statue. The monastery still functions to this day with over 70 monks. The basilica of Montserrat began its construction in the 16th century, and now houses an art museum. It is also the place where la Escolania, one of the oldest Boys’ Choir in Europe, performs during religious ceremonies.

Great tour, would definitely recommend! Very knowledgeable and personable guide who provided a lot of info (I think her name was Alex and she was the best guide we had on our 10 day trip in Barcelona and Paris). Bus with airconditioning much more comfortable than metro/train. Half day was perfect for us—hit the market, St Joan funicular (costs extra) with short hike, and quick run into shop. If you want to do any of the longer hiking trails or museum or just really like to do everything at a site, you would need more time than this half day tour allows.

Our guide (Daniel) was great, very knowledgeable and he kept it fun. Montserrat is very cool, but be sure to go early to avoid the crowds and heat. The bus was nicely air conditioned and comfortable. And we had just the right amount of free time for exploring.

We had a very knowledgeable and funny historian named Danny as our guide and he provided a lot of context and history regarding Barcelona and the Monserrat basilica and surrounding areas. Trip took about 50min to arrive at Montserrat and the guided tour was about 1hr. After that we had about 1hr 15min to walk around. We hiked to St Michael’s lookout point which took about an hr round trip. There isn’t time to do other things like the funicular. We also tried the matos cheese sold at the farmer stands near the bus parking which was delicious. Would recommend if you are looking for a day outside of Barcelona and Danny is a great guide who also gave us local recommendation for a great tapas restaurant in town.

This was a good tour to get to Monserrat Monastery. We were given a short tour around and then had 2 hours of free time to look around, go one the funicular, look through the art gallery etc. We did the morning tour and were there before it was busy. My tips would be to do a morning tour and do the funicular first if you are going to do it and then you know what time you have left for other activities.

Nice half day trip to that area. Pretty ride through the curvy mountainside. Had a quick tour of the main church and we had a short timeframe to visit another area of the venue. We chose the visit to the Santa Cova using the cable car. A 20 min walk is required to get to hit esmall church where the black Madonna was originally found.

The half day was a great experience. However, I would suggest doing a full day tour. There just isn’t enough time to see all the things on the half day tour. Also, I would recommend bringing your own food (maybe sandwiches) for lunch or a snack. The food is over priced. I do not have any complaints! It was a great trip and I’m glad we did it. This review is strictly for people who may complain later on about not having enough time or the food being expensive.
