Explore Catalunya , C/ Palau de la Música, 1, 08003 Barcelona, Spain

Explore Catalunya Office. We are located in a little alley between the Palau de la Música building and Via Laietana, opposite the Palau de la Música's cafeteria.

8:30 AM
Hard Rock Cafe , Pl. de Catalunya, 21, 08002 Barcelona, Spain

Depending on the size of the group on the day, your tour will return either to the main office or to the Hard Rock Cafe- in Place Catalunya, which is just a simple 3-5 minute walk from the office.

Start your trip from central Barcelona, continuing by an air-conditioned vehicle on a drive through the lush countryside to the charming village of Besalú. Once you arrive, hop out to begin a walking tour of this ancient city, stopping to admire its streets lined with medieval-era architecture. Then visit a nearby mikveh (a 12th-century Jewish bath) before stopping by a medieval synagogue.

Continue next to Castellfollit de la Roca, a positively minuscule town situated on the edge of a basalt cliff. This tiny village harbors 1,000 citizens in a town that’s just 3,280 square feet (1,000 square meters). Proceed to Rupit, where you have time to wander this beautiful hamlet at your leisure. Stroll the cobblestone roads lined with 16th-century houses, cross the city’s hanging wooden bridge, and make a visit Rupit’s baroque-era Church of Sant Miquel. Feel free to have lunch (at your own expense) before checking out the ruins of the Castle of Rupit set on a picturesque rocky peak.

After Rupit, take a scenic drive towards the sandstone cliffs at Cingles de Tavertet, set in the Ter River Valley, passing by the area’s megalithic tomb and its Iberian Wall as well. Then arrive in Tavertet, taking time to explore the area’s 48 preserved homes from the 16th and 17th centuries with your guide. Hear a few details about the village from your guide before checking out the 11th-century Romanesque Church of Sant Cristòfol. You then have time to take a break, grabbing a coffee (at your own expense) or enjoying a short walk to the scenic overlook at Panta de Sau lake.

Finish your trip with a ride back to Barcelona, during which you enjoy vistas of verdant-green forests like Magatalls, along with the UNESCO Man and Biosphere-listed El Montseny natural park. You are dropped off back at your departure point in Barcelona at the end of the day.

Great day trip from Barcelona
Jeremy_G
, Aug 2022
This was a fantastic day trip to get out of Barcelona and see the Catalonian interior. The small group format made the whole experience much more personal and intimate. Our guide, Sergio, was very knowledgeable, sharing lots of interesting facts and stories about the places we were traveling through; from the streets of Barcelona, the highway trip to Besalú, and in each town (his English was great too). Our lunch in Rupit was at an adorable Catalan place with a great view. The drive up to Tavertet was scenic, while walking through Tavertet was quiet and magical. Something to keep in mind is that the souvenir options decrease as the trip goes on, so if you're looking for a memento, the best place to buy will be in Besalú (there are a few stores Rupit and none in Tavertet).

Great tour with a great tour guide Xavier. X is a very knowledgeable, friendly, courteous and humorous guide and a real mensch (Catalonian for "fine and honest person). The tour was magnificent, combining history, sightseeing and an unforgettable experience. Atop flight agency with top flight tour guides. A must have when touring Barcelona and its environs. 5 stars plus another bunch of stars 🌟.

Charming Medieval Streets and Beautiful Views

, Jul 2022
This tour was full of beautiful views and charming medieval streets. If you want to go back in time, love to go walking, and behold beautifully preserved architecture, than this experience is perfect. Our guide Giordi (forgive me if I spelled his name wrong!) was great. He was able to tell us interesting details about the history and architecture of each place that we visited. He also took us to a few off road lookouts to take in the incredible landscape from the highest points. He was kind and patient with all of us. I really enjoyed this day trip and highly recommend.

Super organized company and great tour!

We did several Viator tours during our recent visit to Barcelona. This was probably our favorite in large part to our outstanding guide, Arnou. There were only two family groups in our tour plus a tour guide in training, so we rode in one of their 9-person vans instead of one of their large buses (which we took on another tour). There were pros and cons to riding in the van. The big Pro was getting to chat with Arnou. He was hooked up to a microphone even in the small van, so it was easy to hear him, and he was SO knowledgeable about Barcelona history. We learned A TON just on the drive thanks to him. He was completely adept at handling questions and providing detailed and engaging responses. Besalu was amazing and thorougly impressed my two teens. Rupit was also great. Felt a bit rushed, but great to see, and lunch (arranged by Arnou) was fabulous, in a restaurant run by the same family for five generations. Our host at the restaurant was charming and delightful. Arnou kindly called ahead to arrange for them to accommodate the pescatarians in our group. It was a great day! The only reason I'm deducting a star was the van was so hot for most of our journey. We sat in the last row and really struggled with the heat in the van. I have to say though that we took two searate trips with this company (Explore Catalunya) and they were super organized, and their bus (taken on another tour) was very comfortable. I see other reviews about the temperature in the vans, and I wish they'd address that.

I would highly recommend this tour and our guide, Anna. It is a long day: from the time I arrived at the office to when we returned was nearly 11 hours but it is so worth it. The villages are beautiful and the scenery overall is gorgeous. Anna was a fantastic guide. She drove our group of 6 though the mountains of Spain and showed us around each village, pointing out interesting features and giving us a quick lesson is Spanish history. We had free time to explore on our own in each village and she made suggestions for different lunch venues.

Hello, Good to see how much you enjoyed the day. Anna is one of our newest guides and it's great to see that she is doing such a good job. Thanks, Robert

The places we visited were nice, Medieval, cobbled street towns. It was a lovely get-away from the city, tasting a different part of Spain! Although the rainy May weather,we spent great time with our guide. Honestly, this is exactly the way all guides should treat their customers, with great care! The guide was very knowledgable and he had personal attention to each of. We not only spent good time with him but were given great piece of advice for our stay in Barcelona. I highly recommend! Thank you!

Green and idealic

Genuinely had a fantastic experience even though it was pouring rain when we went. Each Of the three medieval towns (Besalu, Rupit, and tavertet) had their own unique characteristic that made it special. Our tour guide was accommodating and always put himself forward with what we may need (amazingly he had several umbrellas to pass around) and had several recommendations not just from the tour but our stay in Barcelona. Would love to do this tour again and would suggest it to anyone that wanted a more green scenic experience of Spain.

Rod was an excellent tour guide - very charismatic and humorous! He was very accommodating to our needs and answered all of our questions. He captured our attention with the history of these three towns through his personality. We also had adequate free time to shop, explore, and eat a three-course meal.
