Bad, Bad, Bad. Shame on You Viator.

The first big, BAD surprise from a Viator tour. Viator should remove this from their offerings. It is a shame on them and a disgrace. The lunch wolud cost $25 if purchased onsite. At that, it would be outrageously overpriced. It is a buffet, the food cold and dry, sitting out for hours. The tour itself involves being dropped off at the site and picked up. No guide commentary from the driver. This was much needed. The onsite tour of the main house lasted 10 minutes. A fair price for the package would have been $65 per person. Not $120. Do not take this tour.

For those reading this review.... Here is a cost break down: 1)Transportation in a luxury 14 passenger bus. If you were to go by cab or by UBER the cost would be $40.00 EACH way there and back. Middleton place is 27 miles from Charleston and it is extremely difficult to get a ride share service or cab back to the city. 2) Admission to the Gardens $29.00 at the gate 3) 30min guided house museum tour $15.00 per 4) Lunch at Middleton Place restaurant: $25.00 The menu changes with the seasons. The spring buffet is a chef assisted service that features all of the classic lowcountry specialties and is amazing. Most of the year we offer our 3 course meal options. Either way it is a tremendous amount of food and a great value. (don't take our word for it. read our other reviews) Michael, Had you expressed any of these comments or concerns with us while you were with us, or after your tour we could have addressed them and had the opportunity to correct them. Constructive criticism is ALWAYS welcome and appreciated because a a small business we know we can always improve. If you contact the office I will be happy to offer you a FULL refund 877.553.1670 ask for Benjamin. Have a safe trip home.

Lunch, unbelievably delicious. Grounds were great, weather was fabulous. The house tour was disappointing. The people in the out buildings were great with lots of good information.

Not worth the money

After the fact, I realized that this tour was way overpriced. I could have driven myself there, paid admission, and eaten at the restaurant independently for way less money. The "house" was a huge disappointment.

We encourage anyone considering this tour to please do your own research and price comparison. If you still think that you could drive yourself there, experience all of the attractions (admission, gardens, guided house tour ect. ect.) have a 3 course prepared meal at the restaurant and pay "way less money" We'd love to hear how. As for the house. I'm disappointed that you were unhappy experiencing the home. Considering how remarkable it is that the house survived not only the Civil War, numerous hurricanes, the great earthquake of 1886, and is filled with priceless antebellum antiques that were owned by the family, I'd say you must have seen some really incredible places in your travels. Have a safe trip home.

WAY too expensive for the experience
Anonymous

WAY too expensive for what you get. The lunch was great, definitely the best part, but the tour was lack luster and overall experience a little bland. It also felt very obvious in the way they romanticized the wealthy landowners while in large part ignoring the 2,900+ enslaved people who made their life possible over the years. We just thought there would be a little more history and honor to the people who lived there as slaves. P.S. it's not a great thing that the plantation owner signed the order of Secession from the Union, that probably shouldn't be so celebrated.

Hey Anonymous! Happy to hear that you enjoyed the lunch! Its unfortunate that you somehow missed the numerous exhibits, memorials, and live interpreters that focus specifically on the enslaved persons who worked, lived, and died on the many Middleton owned plantations including Middleton Place. The Staff at Middleton place and our guides have one shared purpose... We want educate people about the WHOLE history of this historic national landmark. Next time you come we'd be glad to direct you to all that you missed. P.S. Williams Middleton did sign the Ordinance of secession.... and His Grandfather Arthur Middleton signed the Declaration of independence (history is complicated) Have a safe trip home.

It was an amazing experience. Being black and stepping my feet on a real plantation brought so many feelings. It's hard to explain.
