In 1860, a contest was launched for the construction of a new opera house in Paris. It was young architect Charles Garnier's project that was unanimously adopted for its exuberant mix of ostentatious and eclectic baroque architecture. 73 sculptors and 14 painters worked on it until its inauguration in January 1875. Measuring 172m in length and 124m in breadth, the Opera Garnier is the largest opera house in Europe, with the capacity to welcome more than 2 000 people.

If you've never been to the Opera Garnier in Paris, I highly recommend this tour. It starts when the general public is not allowed anymore, but the performance hasn’t started yet, so the theatre is almost empty with all the beautiful architecture, sculptures and paintings to admire on your own. We had a French guide with a good English and a good sense of humor. He was very entertaining and told us interesting facts and anecdotes about this famous building, including the story of the Phantom of the Opera. The interior, sculptures and paintings are truly beautiful and reminded me of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Versailles and the Sistine Chapel in Vatican put together.

Very informative tour. Unfortunately our tour guide spoke with a light/high voice therefore it was difficult to hear unless you were front and center, and considering the size of the tour group that was often impossible. There were many tours taking place at the same time and sometimes this added to the difficulties of hearing if you were again, not front and center.

Only Got Half Of A Tour

Unfortunately, we were not able to see the actual auditorium because there was a last-minute rehearsal. Since this was what we came for, it was disappointing, but not the fault of the tour guide. It was nice to see the rest of the Opera without lots of tourists, so I would recommend this after-hours tour, but make sure you are able to see it all.

The opera Garnier inside is spectacular, the guide was entertaining, very knowledgeable of the history of France and also the construction of the magnificent building. His exhibition was very detailed throughout the tour and pleased one of the members of the group that was interested in knowing the history of the opera ghost. Unfortunately, I do not remember his name, but I would like to acknowledge his work, he attended group C on Saturday, September 22 at 5:00 p.m.
