Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Hop aboard your coach in central Rome, and travel south in air-conditioned comfort to Italy’s Campania region. As you travel, listen to tales about the colorful southern Italian area and Mt. Vesuvius.

After the volcano’s infamous AD 79 eruption, lava and volcanic ash destroyed the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Evidence of those ancient streams of lava is still evident in the area.

First head from Rome to Pompeii. Once a thriving Roman city; today the town is best known for its UNESCO-listed archaeological digs, which are home to a wealth of relics. See incredibly preserved fossils and other ruins, plus plaster imprints of the town’s victims who were buried for years.

See the remains of the Forum and Teatro Grande, where some 5,000 people could once be seated. During your self-guided tour, learn about day-to-day life for the Pompeii locals as you wander streets where ancient shops, cafes and even brothels could be found.

Enjoy free time for sightseeing.

Then, journey to the infamous volcano. Step out of your coach for a steady-paced, walk to Mt Vesuvius’ summit, from where the most breathtaking views await. Make your way over trails covered in pumice rock and ash, before some free time to gaze down into the caldera and across the Bay of Naples.

Finally, head back to Rome by coach and finish with a drop-off at the start point.

Please note: Mt Vesuvius is inaccessible from November 20 to March 31. During this time, the hike is replaced with a visit to the iconic City of Naples. Take a panoramic bus tour and have some free time to walk around the city center.

Location
Stop At:
Pompeii Archaeological Park
The eruption in AD 79 spelled a fiery end for Pompeii, but the catastrophe also almost perfectly preserved the port city under layers of Volcanic ash. Thousands of years later, you can still explore the eerie streets and step inside homes, bathhouses and fast food places on your self-guided tour. You’ll travel from Rome to Pompeii in an air-conditioned private coach, accompanied and entertained all the way by your expert tour co-ordinator. Skip the line at Pompeii and head for a leisurely self-led tour around the city which paints a vivid picture of life in final days before the eruption. Throughout the ruins, you’ll come across harrowing death casts: plaster recreations of unfortunate citizens preserved by the superheated volcanic ash.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Admission Ticket Included
Stop At:
Vesuvius National Park
It’s a short coach ride from Pompeii to the foot of the volcano that still looms above it. A half-mile hike from the parking lot takes you right to the sometimes still-steaming crater of Mt. Vesuvius – still perhaps the most dangerous volcano in the world. Stand at the epicentre of that ancient disaster and feel awe at the utter devastation it must have caused, to blast an entire city off the map for millennia. Then turn and enjoy the contrast: the crater offers the most stunning view of the sun-drenched Bay of Naples. In the winter months, when Vesuvius is closed for hiking, the tour travels from Pompeii to Naples, with panoramic views of the volcano and historical commentary from your tour co-ordinator along the way. You’ll have ample free time to explore Naples – a city as vibrant and alive as Pompeii is quiet and affecting – before the comfortable coach returns you to Rome.

Pompeii is great but it should include more extras

Let me start with saying that Pompeii is an absolute must to see! It was absolutely breathtaking to walk those streets and exploring the ancient city. However! for this price they should at least include a lunch OR an audioguide to Pompeii! We had to purchase audioguides, the company doesn't provide a guided tour there. And it was very expensive to eat there! There is also not enough time in Pompeii! They give you 3 hours including lunch and we had to choose between seeing the amphitheater or the forum and other buildings and we were disappointed we couldn't complete the audiotour (which we paid for separately!). They also took us all the way up the mountain only to discover the hike was closed due to strong winds so we had to turn around and go to Naples instead which was an absolute waste of time. We got stuck in awful traffic and Naples itself isn't worth seeing. Dirty and run down, we should've just gone back to Rome. In all fairness, they did refund the tickets to the Vesuvius but there was a lot of wasted time driving around and we would've preferred just more time in Pompeii.

Waste of your time and money

This trip is definitely not worth the price. Bus was so old and dirty and very uncomfortable, which is not ok for a 3.5 hours drive in one direction. Visit to Pompeii went fine and everything was as planed, but when we were about to climbe the mountain to see Vesuvius the tour guide started to make excuses why we won’t be able to see the volcano crater as we should but she said that they had the alternative for us. When we came at the top they didn’t give us tickets for the national park and some guy took our group in the opposite direction of the main entrance to the national park. After that we walked for 1.5 km and to our surprise the guy told in the middle of nowhere that the tour is over and that we can go back. My boyfriend and I were very dissappointes as we didn’t see the volcano or the Vesvius crater and that was a main reason for us to buy this trip. Tour guide didn’t even appologize to us or offered us a refund as we didn’t even enter the national park Vesuvius. Since this trip is very pricey, I suggest you to organize it on your own. And also, the driver and tour guide were talking loudly to each other 85% of the drive, which I find very rude and unprofessional.

Not what was described

While the guide was wonderful and the sites we saw beautiful, the trip description is very incorrect. There was (nor was there ever a plan) to go to Vesuvius. I encourage Viator to fix this bate and switch

Pompei and Positano in a day? With friendly, knowledgeable tour guides? And a good driver to handle the trip down from Rome and back? Yes, please! This is a great day trip, we had a great time, and we highly recommend it!

Amazing trip

The trip was brilliant. Chiara, our guide was lovely, very informative and helpful. The stories she shared with us were great as it was not only about Vesuvius and Pompeii but Rome and Italy and food. As someone who is not into organised tour and like to do things on my own, I really appreciated the format: the information is given to you in the bus and then you do the visit on your own, at your own pace. I would definitely recommend this one. It is obviously too short a time in Pompeii because there is so much to see but it is a good introduction and makes you want to come back to visit again. Shout out to our driver Fausto (hope it's the right spelling) for the smooth driving especially when going up and down Vesuvius

Disappointed

In general there was nothing wrong with this tour.... but for the amount of money it cost I thought we had a guide throughout pompeii but we didn't not only that but we were told to buy the audio guide.... I thought I paid for a tour.... it was a bus ride with a great guide that never guided us anywhere but on the bus... this isn't her fault as she did her job... but her job should have been to guide us through pompeii

Didn't get to climb Mt vesuvius....
Maggie_C
, Sep 2021
So our tour guide was AWESOME but viator/city wonders screwed up and we were not allowed to climb Mount vesuvius because we arrived 5 minutes later for the arrival designated on the ticket. This was our last day in Italy and we chose this tour specifically to hike/climb up Mt vesuvius and were not able to do it. We paid over $600 for this tour and we're not able to do what we paid for.

Andrea did a fantastic job on the bus trip of describing the history of the time that gave us real context and brought Pompeii to life. The highlights marked to see were well selected and the itinerary schedule for the day was great.
