Your gladiator lesson takes place at the Gladiator School of Rome, located near the Colosseum on the historic Appian Way. Specializing in the reenactment of ancient Roman life and gladiator fighting, your instructors are members of the Historic Group of Rome and will begin your class by providing you with your costume — a traditional belt, tunic, leather gloves, and a training sword known as a rudis.

Learn the basic skills of gladiator sword fighting before summoning your imagination and channeling your inner ancient Roman as you fight off ferocious lions and battle other sword-wielding gladiators. If you wish, you can participate in an optional gladiator tournament, complete with a prize for the victor. Either way, all participants receive a certificate of accomplishment at the end of your lesson.

Friends and family are allowed to watch your class from the viewing platform. Admission to the Gladiator School of Rome Museum is also included so you can check out gladiator weapons and other artifacts.

Building memories that last

With so many things to do and see in Rome it can be overwhelming. For my son the one standout memory he has is of his gladiator training. I think it will remain with him always. Thanks for the experience!

Best kept secret in Rome

This was our family's absolute favorite roman experience. We brought our two 6 year Olds and a teen and along with dad, they had the time of their lives. Possibly one of our favorite activities to date. Learning about gladiator combat and the history of the Roman empire was made super easy and fun by our guide/legionaire Massimiliano was a breeze thanks to his upbeat and engaging demeanor. I HIGHLY recommend this to all families.

Experiencing History

This was a highlight of our trip to Rome. The instructor Marcus was able to keep all 3 children 11, 9 and 6 entertained. This was no easy feat since the older two jumped right in but the the younger one was a bit intimidated at first. By the end though they all had a great time and were practicing the fencing moves at dinner that night.

Spectacular experience! The whole family had fun. There's a short history in the on site museum/equipment room. After that we learned basic moved and was able to spar. We ended up with great memories and wonder pictures. Highly recommend!

Highlight of our trip: Family of Four

I’m not exaggerating when I say this was one of the highlights of our trip to Rome. Yes, seeing all the historical sites are fun, but this was a chance for us as a family to learn, play and have a much stronger emotional experience to the spectators And gladiators of Rome. Our guide/trainer was kind, knowledgeable and did a terrific job with our group, including the kids. It’s a little off the beaten path, and it’s obviously not as polished as some of the other places in Rome, but for us it was hands down worth it and made our visit that much more of an experience.

Becoming a gladiator

This was definitely the highlight of our time in Rome. My wife was apprehensive to “gladiator training”. By the end of it, she didn’t want to leave. You get a real hands on experience using a rudis to begin with. At the end you get to fight with the trainer using real iron swords and shields. I’d also like to mention that most tours or interactions Italians use “Italian time”. The trainer was there early and interactive. This professionalism was very much appreciated. Highly recommend!

We had an absolutely fantastic afternoon at Gladiator school. My 9 year old and 6 year olds both said it was the absolute best day of their lives and would have loved to go again and again. Myself and husband also had an opportunity to get involved and both had great fun too. The guidance, history of gladiators in the museum was very interesting and we all learnt a lot. I would definitely recommend Gladiator school to anyone who has an interest in this area!
